Default Muncie Experts Step Inside Please...

I have the M-22 4-spd on my 73 L-82. While underneath my car the other day I notice something hanging down from the side of my tranny case. Looks like a wire with a rubber boot, and it looks to me that it should be connected near the front and bottom of the tranny case on the driver's side. I can tell you what it is not. It's not the speedo cable and not the reverse light. Can someone PLEASE tell me what it could be?

I don't have my shop /assmbly manual with me, I believe that goes to the shifter lever side cover mounted switch. Runs to a solenoid on the engine for emmisions control.

I sounds like the black wire that connects to the trans control spark switch,(TCS). The round plug like terminal pushes onto the pin of the switch. The switch is located on the driver front of the trans. Threads into the trans, with a 5/8" or so wrench.

The inner(bussiness end)of the switch in the trans, is a steel ball that gets pushed in after shifting into third or 4th gear. Once pushed in and "energized "it grounds the TCS system allowing vacuum advance to the distributor. The switch is not effected in 1st or 2nd gear. All this is assuming the rest of your system is functional.

Sounds like the TCS solenoid to me too, mine has always been disconnected and it has never been an issue.

On your 4 speed when idleing if you put the trans. in 4th gear the idle will increase about 400 rpm within 30 seconds. Only if the vacumn to the distirbutor runs thrugh the TCS solinoid.

This switch tends to get stuck over time. Pull it out and see if the ball moves in and out freely. A solvent wash will loosen it up. Its the easiest part of the system to check.

I have seen adjustments made to correct timing, only to find a stuck switch being energized all the time, the real problem.

So the consensus it's the TCS selenoid. I don't know how long it's been disconnected, but I didn't notice it the last time I was under the car not too long ago. Also doesn't appear to affect much of anything.
Thanks guys,
Chris

No it is not the TCS solinoid it is on the intake at the right of the carburetor with hoses and electrical hooked to it. The part on the trans is the switch to energize the timer on the left firewall and after 30 seconds delay it sends power to the TCS and the plunger moves and allows vacumn to flow to the distributor. That causes the idle to increase if in 4th gear sitting still. If any parts are removed which most are don't worry about any of it.
