The teeth on my flywheel are little chewed up and I suspect I need to have the starter gear mesh deeper into the flywheel teeth.
How should I postion the shim(s) to bring the starter closer to the flywheel? I have the flat long type purchased from the auto store in various thickness. I suppose I can cut them in half if I only need to shim one side or simply use a washer?
I really didn't want to do trial and error since the flywheel is on it's way out.

if you want the starter closer to the fly wheel don't use any shims.....why not just measure the gap between gears with a wire type spark plug feeler gauge and get it to the mesurement that the starter calls for?
