Working on a friends 1971 Corvette T-top, original 350/300 automatic.
It needs new exhaust and I'm headed back to the original type for the car, what's on there now is not original. I've seen 2" or 2.5" exhaust for sale, what did they come with? Does it matter which I go with - other than connecting to the exhaust manifolds - which look to be original as well....
Check out 2.5" 327 SB manifolds as used on the 62' Corvette. They bolt right on the 350 SB and will give you a true 2.5" system all the way to the tailpipes. They look stock too!
I just replaced the 2" exhaust manifolds on my 70' (350/350hp) w/2.5". Worked out great and you can feel the increased HP!
You will also want to order custom 2.5" exhaust tips as stock replacements are only 2". Cost for custom tips is approx. $150.00
Final Comment: Check into the CF archives. The 2.5" exhaust manifolds and custom tip suppliers are well documented (I don't have the information at my fingertips or I would provide this info. to you now).
If you're gonna stick with the stock exhaust manifolds, the 2" system will work fine, although fitting an H pipe will smoothen out the pulses, improve the soulnd, and increase midrange.
They do make 2.5" exhaust that will bolt on to a 2" exhaust manifold. This setup was originally on the LT-1 cars, but can be put on any 68-74 vette if I remember correctly. That would probably be the easiest compromise between getting different manifolds and running 2.5" exhaust. I know both ecklers and Mid-America carry the sets.
2.5" is definitely more difficult to install...but when you get there - Oh the wonderful sound!!! Definitely recommend it's worth the trouble in the end.
I've had the exhaust redone when I had my tranny rebuilt. It had a really shizty 2.5" exhaust job done prior to me buying the car(Bubba). The only good thing I kept was the sweet S.S Magnaflow mufflers.
I can say now the car is quieter, but its hard to say if its the smaller pipes or the shiztty job done prior. I dont really notice any differnece in performace though, just sound.
I installed 2.5" manifolds on my '69 that came off a HP 327 '65. I had them ceramic coated and they bolted right up to the 350. I had to change the alternator bracket because the car had headers on it when I bought it and that bracket would not work, I had Allen's stainless of Logansport, IN make me a 304 stainless system that is 2.5" from the manifolds all the way back to the mufflers. I think the car performs better with this set up that it did with the headers, and it is a hell of a lot cooler both in the cockpit and engine compartment thatn it was with the Hookers. I think the ceramic coating really helped in that regard. I would highly recommmend ceramoc coated 2.5 manifolds on a 350 block. I am extremely pleased with the way it turned out.
