A while back someone posted a link to a website with dozens of buildups on 350's as well at the dyno results for each option. Is there anything similar out there for 454's?
I'll be starting with a stock 454 from a 73 vette and want to do a mild to moderate buildup. What kind of numbers have others gotten from similar buildups on their motors?
Have you compared the ports on the Torker II with the stock dual plane? The Torker II's ports looked small to me. I know this is supposed to promote good low end and mid-range, but my experience with this manifold has shown me that it sure runs out of steam by about 5000 RPM (on a 496) and has lead me to believe it would be better suited as a towing manifold for medium sized big blocks (454-502) and a solid mid-range manifold for the smaller big blocks (396-427). Don't get me wrong, I love Edelbrock equipment, but the advertised operating RPM band of 2500-7500 seems awfully high to me.
Have you had it out to the strip yet? What kind of ET's are you getting?
There's always lot's of talk here about building up 350's and 383's, but I don't see nearly as many threads about building 454's. Too bad.
That's because most people have Small Blocks, including here on the forum. Also, you have to buildup a SB or it is no fun to drive, especially if is 71 or newer whereas BB cars are a blast to drive and have more power bone stock than most of us can use on the street without hurting ourselves, so alot of guys don't build them up. My bone stock 69 L36 427 was more than enough power to have fun with, and I could outrun most cars on the street. But with my 72 L48 car, I am afraid to race the high school kids with the mustangs...that is why the 468 will be going in this Spring!!!
I don't go to dragstrips much. I did take it last year, though. At the time I had a busted fuel pressure regulator and it was running lean. I raced on my regular street tires with a full exhaust and it ran a high 12. I'm thinking with the exhaust cutouts open and a functioning regulator it should do a mid 12, still on regular tires.
Yeah, I realize there are fewer big blocks out there and it makes sense there will be fewer posts about building them up, I'm just trying to solicit some ideas is all...
The stock specs on my '73 motor are 275 HP / 380 Ft-Lb. I'm aiming to move both those numbers into the mid 400 to 500 range while still keeping the car very streetable. I'll be doing most of my driving around town and on country back roads but I still want to be able to smoke a ricer now and then. I just wanted to be sure this was a realistic goal.
The plan is new heads, cam, carb and intake with headers and dual exhaust out the back. I may work on getting the compression up a bit, it's a whopping 8.5:1 from the factory. I'd prefer not to get into the bottom (engine runs good right now).... Ideas?

I hear ya...My 468 has 73 heads, but I'd like to go alum route as well. Actually the stock comp in 73 was closer to 8:1 thanks to the open chamber heads, but they flowed decent to actually increase the hp slightly so you know they flow well if the comp dropped 1/2 pt but hp increased. The torque is actually the same as 72, they just rated it at a lower rpm I think to get the insurance and emissions police off their back. Lots of potential to unlock. Have fun, keep us up to date!
You know your compression is 8:5.1 now,
find out what your stock heads cc is somebody here may know, then onceyou know that get some aluminum heads with a lower cc to bring up your compression,on the cam get something with 244@.50 duration 556 lift, that should get close to 500hp and plenty steetable.
Jim, starting to get an itch to do something. Drag strip, road course... Car is getting spoiled and needs to be put in its place.
Got new valvesprings coming in any day now. Can you believe I've been running on springs that were 120/330 back when they were new 40K miles ago??? Going to 155/360 with Ti retainers.
Yep, planning to go with Nick for the next dyno day running my smart *** mouth.
