Default Rim / tire width

What is the max rim and tire width I can put in the rear of a 79 vette for the best hookup possible?

I don't know if this is the MAX, but I have 275/60-15 BF Goodrich on mine, but the p-brake bracket has been removed. Some just relocate it to the top on the trailing arm, but here in Flat Florida...who needs a stinking p-brake? These are on the stock 8" wide Rally rims (stock t-arms).

I'm sure the offset t-arms allow much more....

I also have 275/60/15. I did not have to move the parking brake but it was close.

The BF Goodrich Radial T/A's are a hard compound (Treadwear rating of 400), and even though have a Traction rating of "A", these do not really "hookup" well. You probably need a softer compound to get a better bite, but if you get too soft, you'll be changing tires every year! The Radial T/A's are probably a compromise between tire life span and traction.

I don't know all the tire "chemistry", but know there's higher traction ratings than "A"..I believe "AA". The E.T. Drag Radials may have this rating, but may be too soft if you use as a daily driver and want some life out of them...????

So, the tire SIZE (275/60/15) is probably fine for hooking-up, but this particular brand is too hard.

Me either, but the ta's are way way way too hard. Mine just spin.

Johnny*, look for posts under scree name red73 on this board or go to www.C3-R.com. Those are some of the nicest looking wheel combos on C3's that I have seen.

Default Wheel width

I have a 79 with the vette brakes ultimate suspension kit and the off set trailing arms. I have Progressive 9X15 wheels all around with 265x50x15Euro TA front and 305x50 Euro TA in the rear. The car is about 1 1/2 " lower than stock. The rear tires are the same height as the stock 255x60 15. They ran fine for over 2 years of autocross untill I hit a dip in the road at high speed that sent both rear tires equally into the top fender which resulted in a slight crack about 1" long on the top of both fenders. 295x50 would have been a better choice.
The tires are so hard they are useless for anything other then a burn out contest.
I want to upgrade to 17" wheel and tire combo. 255/40 front, 275/40 rear.
Not sure on proper back spacing in the rear with offset arms.

I have this size tire on my 15x8 now... w/ drag radials. Hooks DEAD.

Bad thing for me is the Tire height hurts your overall gearing in the rear-end. Tall tire takes away from my 3.36 gear gear.

Much better setup with a lower gear (numerically higher number) 3.73 or 4.10
