Default Steering Power Control Value?

I have a 79 that leaks power steering fluid from the PCV gasket. I also have the problem with steering wheel play, about an inch of play side to side in the steering. A previous owner replaced bushings and tie rods ends. I have tried adjusting the steering box for the play, but it’s still there.

Could the play be from the PCV? How hard is it to rebuild the PVC or should I just get one that is already been rebuilt? Where should I go to purchase the rebuild kit or one that has been rebuilt?

If it's not the PCV I still need to fix the leak...

it could be the pscv. have someone turn the wheel, while you watch the valve. i hate these contraptions, and they are the sole reason im buying the steeroids. dont waste your time on a remaned unit. buy the new one and cross your fingers.

Steeroids looks like a great kit, but a little pricey.

The reason why it's considered better to buy a new valve instead of a rebuilt one is because the valve has parts that wear out, and they are not replaced in a rebuilt unit. The parts cannot be purchased separately... they are the main parts of the valve. To get them, you have to buy a complete new valve.

Those worn parts increase the probability that the valve will leak again either as soon as you install it, or soon there-after. The highways are littered with people who decided to save a few bucks and buy a rebuilt valve instead of a new one. Yours may be rebuildable.. and when you send it in as a core, you kiss it good-bye. Then your rebuilt starts to leak, and you wish you hadn't sent yours in as a core. Yes.... some people get lucky with a rebuilt. But most do not.

The kits are available from several Vette vendors, but all kits are not equal in terms of what they contain, so you have to do some comparison shopping.

On adjusting the steering gear box.... if you do not follow the factory procedure on that, you can do more damage than is already done. The correct adjustment procedure is very specific. A lot of guys just wrench on them without really understanding what they're doing, and end up ruining the internal components. Just a heads up on that one.

Typical procedure (for me) is to remove the valve, assess its condition and rebuild it or replace with new.
