My restoration guy surprised me last week when I went to visit. He had previously convinced me that rebuilding my Qjet with an edelbrock performer manifold was the best combination of original looks (except the manifold) and allowed correct linkage, plumbing, etc... When I went to the shop on Friday, he had a rebuilt Edelbrock (don't know what model) sitting on it. His tech told me the real story...that he either ordered the wrong manifold or he ordered the right one and the wrong one came in ...and rather than fix it...he is "selling" me that he did me a favor...
Before I have my "come to Jesus" meeting with him...did he do me a favor? or just take advantage of the situation?
Car is a '72 350, just rebuilt with mild cam and compression to 9.5 . Shoud be about 325 HP.
Edelbrock series 14** are clone of Carter AFB ... has squarebore flange.
Edelbrock series 19** are clone of Rochester Qjet ... has spreadbore flange ... these Qjet clones no longer in production by edelbrock ... but some may still be in the pipe.
I prefer the Qjet or Qjet clone ... and usually ... those things that I've agreed to.
Edelbrock Performer P/N 2101 manifold carb mounting flange fits both squarebore and spreadbore.

he may have done someone else a favor by giving them your carb if it wa a numbers matching unit!
There is no other carb that could outrun a Q-Jet for economy and throttle response. IMHO, the best carb there is for the street. And I absolutely agree - keep the original unit in your hands! Even if you replace it, but keep it (and the manifold).
The Q-jet is a bit more complex to work on - but this complexity is what makes it superior.
I had a Edelbrock (AFB) on my 78' for a year. Then had the original Qjet "restored" and it works MUCH better than the Edel. At a minimum, you want to hang on to the original Qjet as others have said.
Thanks Bobo where were you went I gave (that's right) gave away the q-jet & manifold. & you ask why I'm not letting Chris build my motor.
On a '79, it's not quite a heinous crime as it is on a '72. Perhaps this attitude will change over time, but perhaps not. I kept my QJet and had the aluminum L82 manifold ceramic coated...
