trying to put new valve seals in my 71BB.. i have the #1 cylinder at TDC, put 80# air press in and valve still goes down with the spring. i hear air escaping when i pressurize cylinder. do i have a more serious problem or am i doing something wrong
I had the same problem when doing my valve springs - not sure what I was doing wrong. I ended up using rope to keep the valves up. You insert a long piece of rope thru the spark plug hole with the piston partially up in the cylinder (make sure to leave a good amount outside the head so you can pull it out later). Then you rotate the engine by hand until the piston gets close to TDC and compresses the rope in the combustion chamber. This will keep the valves up. Once the springs are back on, rotate the engine backwards and remove the loose rope. Go to next cylinder and start the process all over again.
Give the retainer a rap with a hammer to free up the retainers, which are probably stuck.
Have used air in the cylinders without a problem. However, if you put the air pressure to the cylinder, with both valves closed, and you hear air leaking, you have another problem.
Grayhook and I put my piston at TDC, inserted rope, hit the valve with a dead blow hammer a coupla times to loosen the retainer, the swapped out the seal. No air required, no problems.
thanx guys... weather permitting i'll give it a try tommorow...talked to my mechanic and he said if i have blue smoke, its rings and time for a rebuild. hoping doin the valve seals takes care of the prob.

Same as you, I got conflicting opinions on the origin of my blue smoke. I figured I'd try the seals first. As it turns out, it did fix my smoke problem.
