i was changing my valve seals on my 71BB today...didn't know chevy used plastic valve seals, at least thats what mine were. of the 14 i've changed so far only two were in one piece. but the bad thing is one of the lifters stuck on the push rod as i was taking it out and dropped down in the lifter valley. it was #6 exhaust lifter. anyway i can get this back where it belongs without having to pull the intake.

I have in the past been able to retrieve a lifter with a long reach magnet, and get it back in the hole. It takes some skill, and trial and error to get it. For the time it may take it would probably be easier to remove the intake manifold.

Just my $.02

Valve seals are probably not plastic but just brittle with heat/age. You may also be able to use one of those claw type retractable tools to grab the lifter and set it back in the hole.
