My #8 cylinder is dead. I have ruled out spark plug wires and plugs themselves. The distributor cap appears to be in good shape.
The problem first became obvious at high rpm (around 5000 or so) a few months back. The car would begin popping under load. This problem has continued all the way down to where it is now, at 2000 rpm. It is also clear at idle that there is no fire in 1 cylinder (uneven exhaust out of right side).
I haven't run a compression test yet, but there is no smoke so I have trouble believing that it is a ring. So it must be something in the heads, right? BTW this is a stock L48 in a 77. I have only had it a year and I take good care of it.
Pull the valve cover and have someone turn the motor (pull coil wire off first) and check the movement of the rocker arms bet you have a wipe cam lobe or bent push rod.

when you say dead what do you mean? possibly you have a valve that is not working properly, because of a worn cam lobe , bent push rod, broken rocker arm, collapsed lifter...etc...
ok that sounds like a good place to start. I will be swapping out the intake manifold in the next week or so, so I will be sure to do this before then to rule out the cam lobe. I'm kind of a newb, but I imagine a bent pushrod is easy to spot with the manifold off, correct?
