Default Serious Bubba electrical issues on interior - HELP!

Bubba has paid my interior electrical a vists sometime in the past and it's a MESS! Id like to beat whoever did this with a very BIG stick!

But, moving past the anger issues I need some help figuring this out. I'm totally stuck on how to fix this back up. This is a '77. These are the issues in the electrical under the center console:

Issue #1
I'm trying to figure out where that loose connector should go. It connects into the neutral/back up switch of the shifter. Ideas?

Issue #2

There is a rats nest going on with the next pics that show two modules there in the first pic and then some butchering of old harness wires and the cig lighter power.

* First, what are the modules doing?

The 3rd picture is especially a mess. The large gauge red wire comes in to a spliced in 25A fuse and then to a bubba'd connector of an orange/blk with red/blk wire where the red/blk has been cut and goes no where now.

* What did the connector with the cut red/blk wire originally do? Any guesses as to what this new splice is doing now?

The set of white-green-white wires coming from the large can module in the 1st pic come out and go to the rear compartment but then are cut back there and go no where.

* What is this set of white-green-white wires coming from the module supposed to do?

i believe i can help you with this and i think i have lots of pictures of the center console....i'm out of town on a dial up system now and it would kill me trying to get to the Photobucket account can you wait until tomorow night?

i believe the heavy gauge red wire is for the power windows.....if you don't have those perhaps its just part of the wiring harness anyway

Bob, that sounds awesome and since I'm virtually stuck, I'll be patient and wait on ya'.

I have power windows so perhaps it is related.

Also, I was looking at a site that had 78 wiring diagrams and the one large module with the white-green-white (which is actually gray) I *think* may be related to a power antenna which would explain why it goes to the rear compartment and stubs out since I do not have a power antenna. But it doesn't explain why it's bubba'd to death.

The smaller module I'm beginning to believe is after-market something or another. For what I have not yet figured out.

Steve- Hi, I'm Steve too. I spent three weeks in Oct. in my gutted interior. I'm going to give you what I can for help.
1) I can't find anything on that floating connector. It obviously ties in with the reverse gear selection and back-up lights. Maybe a towing connection??
2) The silver module is the power antenna relay. It would have been fastened to the console bracket along with it's ground wire,(black 18g) and an eyelet. The green, white, and gray wires would run back to the antenna motor mounted up under the left rear wheelwell.
3) The large orange and black wire comes from a 30 amp circuit breaker and powers the rear window defrost/defogger.

Given that the other taped splices are in and around the antenna relay, which also ties in to the radio, my guess is that Bubba did a little stereo install, maybe with a big amp that needed the 30 amp circuit. The orange wire, and possibly a yellow (maybe cut) probably went to a nice Pioneer 8-track. That's my 2 cents worth. Good luck with it. Stay patient.

Steve

Trying to trace wires without a wiring diagram can be a very frustrating process. I recommend you get get a good large format FULL COLOR laminated diagram

Restorod (aka Steve!), thanks for the insight. Yes, I'm now thoroughly convinced that the large module is the power antenna module that is not in use. I'll leave it there but no plans to "add" a power antenna.

The other module is apparently a replacement for the power window relay. When I removed it from the circuit my windows can go down but never up.....and at that, they need some convincing to go down. Based on where all the wires are going from this aftermarket module, it appears it may have been some kind of keyless entry system that might have rolled down the windows. Just a guess but this did live for many years as a Texas car where it gets nice and hot and someone might try to do something about that. So, I'm going to undo that and replace it with a factory module. Interesting part is that this likely explains why my PW motors never seemed to have enough *umph* to go up and down. The leads into and out of the module are smaller than stock, not nearly enough to carry current to power the motor and would choke the motor under load.

Not ignoring ya, vetsvette2002. I've got a decent schematic, not color, but decent. The 78 site shows me a little extra detail where the various modules and connectors are physically located which is helpful. But, yes, you can't do this without a schematic. For the record, when you have this kind of Bubba action that is NOT on the schematic and the stuff that is on the schematic doesn't exist anymore, it is challenging to say the least.

Bob, does that seem to corroborate with your pics?

I didn't think a factory power antenna was even available in 77. Probably why the relay is just lying there, Bubba added power antenna at one time and was too lazy to screw the relay down. I agree, that's what it looks like and the wire colors are correct for an antenna.

I also see an aftermarket inline fuse at the top of pic 2 that goes to that antenna relay. Not supposed to be there. I agree, Bubba put in some kind of stereo.

The 3rd pic., that small white connector in the center of the pic is the hot lead for the lighter. The wires spliced into it don't belong there, Bubba again, lookin for an easy hot lead. Does that orange wire go to the antenna relay?

In the second pic., that grey thing in the upper right doesn't look familiar. And that strap with the holes up there is definitely aftermarket radio stuff.

Do you have any factory radio wire connectors there or were they all cut off?

Mike

Keep that 8-Track wiring, you might need it someday!
