Default Hood Clearance

Help Please! I am running an Edlebrock TorkerII single plane intake on my 427 69 Vette with a Holly 4160 750, with a low-profile Moroso air filter with a 2" tall element. The air horn on the carb touches the top of the air cleaner. The big block hood touches the top of the air cleaner. Everything fits so tight I had to make a removeable choke valve to get enough air to the engine. Would an L88 type hood give me at least another inch of clearance? I have thought of going back to an original intake and carb for the 390 horse engine, but I would like to keep everything as is without having to remove the choke valve everytime I want to drive the car.

You say a low profile Moroso air cleaner. Is that the drop base air cleaner ?

Do you have your stock air cleaner still? That has a drop base design & should work w/ your setup. There are a couple of guys here that have run the Torker2 w/ original big block hood. Yes, the L88 hood would give you plenty of clearance but if you do decide to go w/ that hood there are a number of intake manifolds that would fit & also improve your street performance compared to the Torker2.

Thanks for your reply. I think it is the low profile air cleaner, however the problem is I can only use a 2" filter element or the hood will hit the top of the air cleaner. By using only a 2" element the top of the air cleaner touches the highest point of my carb which interfers with the operation of the choke plate and also restricts the amount of air going into the carb. I had to actually remove the choke plate to allow enough air into the carb at full power to get the engine to run right. Maybe a different type carb that is not as tall as the Holly 4160 would work, or maybe I just need to replace the intake, or maybe both. I'm sure an L88 hood would work, but I would really like to keep my original hood if possible. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the reply. You are right on about the Torker II. It doesn't like the low rpms and sometimes talks back when pulling out from a red light, but boy does it come on above 3,000 rpm. I can't decide if I want to keep it or switch to a dual plane intake. My engine has a special cam, but I don't know anything about its specs. It has a rough idle, sounds good, and puts out good power. I don't know what effect switching intakes would have on my cams performance, but I do wish it was a more streetable machine since I'm not into drag racing. Can you explain the difference in the L88 hood with the fresh air chamber and the hood without it, and what modifications I would need to make with either. Thanks for all your help.
