Potentially doing a crate engine in 70 BB car and am looking into hood clearance issues. Any thoughts out there on performance hit with a Performer manifold vs. Performer RPM on GM ZZ454 and ZZ502 crates. My investigation so far indicates that GM ZZ454 and ZZ502 crates use Performer RPM manifolds. This purely a pleasure car, not a racer of any kind. But, I still want to feel it when I hit it. Thanks for any input.
As far as I know there are no aftermarket intake manifolds, that are worth anything, that will fit under the stock big block hood. Edelbrock makes a single plane that will fit but it is less than desirable. Neither of the manifolds you list will fit.
Chevrolet put aluminum spreadbore intake manifolds on the '68 and '69 390 HP 427's. This was the L36. They can be found on eBay from time to time.
As far as I know this is the only aluminum dual plane intake manifold that will fit under the stock big block hood. Look for numbers 3919849, 3937793 and 3947801.
Now, if you have an L88 hood that opens up some more possibilities.
I just a few month's ago I put the zz454/alum head motor in my 71. The intake they give you with the motor will not even come close to closing. I had to go with the torker 2 to get the hood to close. With the alum heads and the oval ports it was the only one that would fit. I think the steel head motor has rectangular ports so that may give you more options. You could always use the one from your motor. I only have about 200 miles on it so far and it seems to run o.k. I know most people say the intake is junk but compared to the stock motor it is running stronger. I will say I do wonder how much better it would run with the orig intake but i was not willing to give up the stock hood.
Why don't you just rebuild the motor in it? It was not an option for me as one of my pistons went out the side of the block.
If you do a search on some of my post's you will find some pics of the motor.
Good Luck
Tony
I heard that the Holley street dominator will fit with a drop down base. But I don't know. Does anyone else out know? Holley tells me it will fit. What about the performance of these intakes. I have a stock Alum one.
Thanks for the feeback. Have done some pricing on rebuild, and newer parts for the while-I'm-at-it disease that goes with these types of projects. The Cha...Ching factor goes up real quick when thinking about upgrades on a rebuild, aluminum heads, cam, rockers, intake, etc. I'm a fairly sophisticated parts changer and don't mind digging into something I have not done before, but do not feel confident on an engine rebuild. I would be paying for the rebuild and comparing prices, crate start looking more favorable.
Any thoughts on a rebuild strategy would be of interest on the original. Its a weekend fun car, not a racer. Thanks again.
Im redoing my 1970 bb right now as well. due to soct considerations Im going with the h.o. 454. for the $$ I cannot find a better deal. a rebuild of my orig motor would be about 3500, without the roller cam that comes with the h.o.. I considered a stroker crank to get to 496 ...again too $$.
the motor I have is not original so, ill sell it to recoup some $$. I too have the "while im at it " disease. started when i wanted to repaint the car, then thought, you know what if this old motor(which i know nothing of its innards) gernades on me? new paint and in the shop for blown motor, naw bette redo motor too....while im at it , redo 4 spd.... while im at it , redo rearend diff... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa now im looking at real money

Engine is original LS-5. Budget--I'm looking at zz454 and zz502 as one option. If I rebuild the original, I would not want to spend much more than $5,500-6,000 (anymore might as well do the crate) , but if I do the rebuild, I only want to do it once, and improvements, roller cam, heads, and all the other work (machining) that should be done. I'm looking for a very streetable car, that has some go, while maintaining the stock hood.
