Alrighty, i'm back after a very long hiatus (i bought a mustang and just recently totaled it off - weather related accident) and i'm starting to think i just oughtta finish the vette off the way i want to.
The current motor is a 427cid BBC. the block casting number is as follows:
3869942 - other marks on the block include HI-PERF PASS, and it's also stamped TRUCK along with that.
Most of the stroker kits i have found start with a 454 block, but i thought there were generally all the same?
what are my options as far as stroker kits are concerned. most common i see from a 454 is a 496. could mine be clearanced to fit that?
That casting number block was used for a long time. If it is an early casting you should be able to grind enough to clear. Should be is key. It somewhat depends on the rods that you use. Some later blocks with that casting number came from the factory as 454's. Check the side of your block for a casting date. Do you know for sure that it came from the factory as a 427? Could it have been a 454 converted to a 427 with a different crank?
942 was first used in '66 Vettes and full size Chevys. If the casting date is before July 1966, it is valuable to a '66 owner who needs a correct block.
You might be better off to sell it and buy a 454 or a crate engine.
