The interface connections on the Saginaw pumps were converted to metric fasteners in 1980. The four tapped holes (M10x1.5) on the front face and the two studs (M10x1.5) on the back of the reservoir were converted to metric along with the discharge port (o-ring with M16x1.5 female thread) in the pump.

I am quite sure that the brackets that were used to attach the pump to the engine didn't change. In other words, the clearance holes for the M10 fasteners were basically the same as they were when the older pumps used 3/8-16 UNC fasteners. The power steering pressure hose did change from a 45 degree flare fitting with a male 5/8-18 UNF thread to the metric o-ring end connection.

Your 1977 pump would use conventional 3/8-16 UNC fasteners and the 45 degree flare fitting not metric fasteners.

Don't forget that the Saginaw pumps were converted to a interference fit pulley in 1975. Before that time, the pulley attached with a nut and a key.

Saginaw pumps are so simplistic in design that; all of the big 3 used them...the Ford camp copied the internal workings in the late 70's and had their own Saginaw designed pump working in the 80's...remember the small plastic housing Ford pumps that leaked?...that was Fords Saginaw copied pumps.

If you want to install one of the "metric" PS pumps in your early C3, you'll have a problem with the metric PS pump high pressure outlet that uses a metric 0-ring fitting. It won't match up to your early C3 english dimensioned high pressure hydraulic hose (5/8-18 UNF). A good way to encounter this problem is to install the GM Performance serpentine kit on your early C3. The serpentine kit comes with a metric PS pump. I had a custom made high pressure hydraulic hose made for my 68. The guy that made the hose also sold me a PS metric 0-ring to 5/6-18 UNF adapter made out of brass. It cost a whopping $8 or so. So if you don't want to have a custom made hose, you can just buy this expedient adapter. I imagine that most PS repair shops will have this adapter available for sale.

................

PS: I opted to have custom made hose made insted of relying on the adapter. The serpentine kit moves the PS pump forward about a 1/2. I therefore had my custom hose made about 1/2 inch longer. The custom hose has the metric 0-ring fitting for the PS pump high pressure outlet and the other end has an english fitting for the control valve.
