Default Smog pump question

Ok, so while driving to the local gas station to fill up my 75 (l48 ), the belt that drives the smog pump started squealing. drove it home (3 blocks) and noticed that the pump has a grinding noise coming from it (presumably a bearing problem in the pump, as it was locked, but now spins with noise). can i simply remove the belt to the pump until the 383 gets finished (at which point, no smog pump will be in the car, of course), or will this cause driveability problems on the otherwise stock, 165hp big-block eater?

You can remove the belt without any adverse problem to the engine.

...you can take the belt off of it with no adverse affects-all they really did was to "pump" air into the exhaust passages to help burn off any unburned fuel, hydrocarbons, etc. Whatever you do, DO NOT throw it away-these original dated pieces can bring $500-$2000 depending on the rarity, condition, completeness, etc., of these "smog" pieces. Carefully & neatly bag it & box it up if you decide to keep it or sell it-just DO NOT simply throw it away!!!!!

my plan was to leave it on the engine, just remove the belt (4 belt setup) until the 383 goes in, at which point the smog pump will be packaged up with everything else for storage.

i do feel a little bit idiotic storing a 165hp small block with 92,000 original miles, though

...why? I have my "original" 205hp L-82 w/144,000mi out of my '75 on the garage floor on an engine crate wrapped in plastic. A new $1187 '73-'85 Replacement GM 260hp 350ci engine took it's place last year.

although i know that the numbers matching l48 will (somehow ) prove more valuable in the car someday, it just seems like a waste of garage space for 165hp of smog-choked fury.

One thing you'll hear from the majority of people on this forum is keep all of your original equipment. It may look like a pile of crap, but the fact that it's original makes it sort of worth something, somehow. If for some reason you end up selling it some buyer may want the original engine to restore it.

...flood, I'm not into racing or performance, I'm just more of a cruiser. Yeah, sure I like to "get on it" at times, go through the gears, get up to 130mph+ on an open freeway, but I've put 7,000mi now on that new GM 350/260hp 4bolt main motor and it runs super smooth-plenty of power for me. With the BorgWarner Super T-10 wide ratio transmission(that I converted from an automatic)and with the original 3.36:1 gears, it's a very good runner + it'll get 23mpg on long highway trips.
