Default Found the problem

A couple of day ago I posted a thread about the series of problems I have had with my now 900 mile Summit distributor. First the ignition module then last week the condenser. Well it’s the condenser again, now I don't know what is causing the condenser to go so quickly?

Default Heat

Depending on where the condensor is, heat could be eating it alive.

We had similiar problems with a new R&D distributor last year that ate coils and ignition modules every 400-500 miles. We found that ventilating the distributor base kept the heat down and allowed things to live longer. The GM design is still the best.

The condensor is in the Summit distributor so I don't know how it is getting too hot. My friend that also has a 81 and the same Summit distributor is not having any problem. He also drives the same roads as I do in the same heat?
Now I am affraid to drive too far with the distributor condensor going out so quickly.

Dean,
I've been in electronics quite a while...I have rarely seen a capacitor go south from heat, on the other hand a voltage much higher then a caps rating will fry it in no time...the "condenser" is there to control the voltage spike when the points open while the coil is "saturating"...if you are buying the same brand condenser each time it goes south, there may be a bad lot during manufacture...see if you can find a Delco. If in fact you have a heat problem, you could always splice a longer wire on the condenser and mount it grounded outside the distrubutor...the added short wire should not cause any problems due to resistance of the wire...hope this helps..
