I'm running the XE268H cam in my 72, only have the 76cc heads with larger valves, and pop up pistons...should be fairly close to what you have compression wise (see my background for more info). It doesn't kill your bottom end torque, but it really likes the midsection of the rev range (3000 rpm to 5000 rpm). In fact I'm pretty happy with this cam up to 6000, so far it hasn't run out of breath. In fact with your close ratio tranny, you should be able to keep this cam in its power area much easier then me.

Seems like the cam would be a good choice, but if you're concerned about low-end then you should ditch the 3.08 gear.

I work on a lot of Vettes with the XE268 during the Tunng for Beer Tours - it's a very common cam. The idle is pretty smooth with a slight lope, and power comes on strong at anything over 1500 rpm. It will keep pulling through redline, and it has tons of low and mid range torque. It's not at all a "big" cam. The 3.08 rear gear will kill your low end no matter what cam you have in it...

Or plop in a Richmond 5-speed like I did. Costs twice what a diff. rebuild but it is nice having 5...
