Well, I recently changed the alternator belt since the old one was getting really loose and would jump sometimes when I ran it hard. Now, there is a squeak when it gets warm, but only at low RPM (below 1000 or so). I'm assuming it's the belt. I've tried adjusting the tension on it, but no change. As soon as it gets nice and warm, it starts squeaking again. Ideas???
Make sure the belt and pulleys are clean. I've used laquer thinner before with good results. Do NOTuse any belt dressings as they will make things worse in the long run. New belts generally have to be readjusted after they run awhile and stretch. I once put on a new belt that was hard, not as pliable as it should have been, and it squeeked like hell, and had to replace it right away.
I would make sure the pulleys are clean and not causing the squeak. Could just be a bad belt that had been sitting on a shelf for a long time as they do not sell near as many as they used to.
If your old belt was slipping for some time, it may have had the effect of polishing your pulley(s). This gives the new belt less area for traction on the pulley. Pull the pulley(s) and have it bead blasted and powder coated and the new belt won't slip. If its a daily driver, , clean the pulley with lacquer thinner, sand it with coarse grit sand paper to rough it up and hit with some krylon semi flat black paint. The paint or powder gives the belt something to bite into.
I removed my bad A/C compressor and belt and had the same problem (more on hard accelleration). I found that I needed to re-install the A/C compressor and belt -- problem solved. I have come up with several theories on this (some over a couple beers), but have not raised the question in the forum. Maybe someone has some input.
