Default Heads and Header Tricks

OK, Hooker sidepipe fans. I want to build a 540+ with a good set of aluminum heads that will allow me to still run my Hooker headers/sidepipes. I see that most afttermarket heads have raised exhaust ports. Has anyone done this. My pipes almost touch the body as it is.

Take a look at the new Brodix Race Rites. I hear good things about their flow numbers & they have exhaust ports in the stock location. They come in oval & rectangular ports.

Doesn’t the 540+ cid require the use of a tall deck block?

Edelbrock Victor Jr CNC rectangular port heads flow well with ports in the stock location.

Guys have posted on this but I don't remember who. He had to extend each and every tube to make the side pipes fit.
I have .600 raised exhuast ports and it really makes a difference in fit. My collectors seem to be really tucked up now.
I don't think your side pipes will fit with raised exhaust ports. At the same time as the ports move up they move outward also and you can run into steering box problems as well.
Even my passenger head now runs into the frame.

Thanks ZL1 and Norval. I would have a fortune tied up in custom headers and the Vic Jr's or Raceright may be the ticket. 427Hotrod had suggested I look at the Raceright as well. I hope I don't have to sacrifice too much HP to keep the pipes.

The AFR heads *are* good heads, but they have raised exhaust ports -- either 0.300" or 0.375" I forget. Dart heads have 0.300" raised exhaust ports and both Brodix and Canfield exhaust ports are raised 0.600". I have a friend who had to modify his Hooker side pipe headers to work w/ the Brodix-2 heads.

No personal experience w/ Brodix Race Rites (std exh port location), but I've heard good things about them. GMPP and Edelbrock Performer/Performer RPM heads have their exhaust ports in stock location as well.

Good luck,

Mark
