Was the rear sway bar standard on a 79'?

It was not standard on the L 48. It may have been on a higher horsepower model. My '79 did not come stock with one.

My 79 came with rear sway bar and a 1 1/8 inch front sway bar but
was ordered with the FE7 suspension package. This car is a L48 Auto.
Also have a 79 L82 4 speed with standard suspension and has no rear
swaybar.

It was probably a suspension option. I would like to add a stock one to my '79 to see if it will give it less understeer and maybe just a bit of oversteer.

FE 7 had a 7 leaf rear spring and standard susp.had a 9 leaf which
at first glance seems backwards but thats the way it is.

The rear sway bar could only be had with FE7 according to sales
ordering guide I have. It does not appear to have been a part of
any other RPO.Yours was probably added at some point during the
past 26 years. I added one to My L82 4speed car and its probably
been done to a bunch of'em over the years.

You had to order the gymkhana package to get the rear sway bar. You also got the beefier springs. I let the salesman talk me out of the option, and added the parts later. The aftermarket rear sway bars are mounted different than stock. You can tell if your car was originally opted that way by the type of rear sway bar.

The 7 leaf spring and a tiny sway bar@1/2 inch was on my 79 L-82 with the handling package

The 7 leafs are all thicker bars than the 9 leaf type.

I replaced the stock with bigger stuff after about 5 years because I thought the rear spring was starting to sag.
