I got my M22 rebuilt (was jumping out of third gear) The rebuilder put in a new 2nd and 3rd gear as well as bearings, bushings, syncros..... and everything alse that goes with a rebuild. Reinstalled this weekend and now I can't even fast shift into 2nd or 3rd. If you drive like an old lady it works ok. The rebuilder said I have to drive it and break it in. I never heard of breaking in a manual trans before, it either works or it don't. I think he did'nt do something right. A buddy asked me if the builder timed the gears when putting it together and I assume he did if this is a part of the rebuild. Does anyone know if timing of the gears would cause this problem?
Not sure but Keisler talks about noticeably firmer shifts for the first 500-1000 miles. It sounds to me that your builder could be telling you the truth. Give it some time and see if it gets better.
Well gears rarely fit together perfectly right away so I'd suspect that they need some wear to fit right. Drive it 500 - 1000 miles and then see how it feels.
If he changed 2nd and 3rd gear but not the countershaft then you'll have new gears running against old. This usually is a noise issue since thegears themself do not move. The syncros lock on each gear buy a sliding hub (aka a slider). When rebuilding the fit of the gear, syncro and slider should be free. The dog retainer springs in the kits are usually longer and may be dragging the engagement of the syncro's. If should be a firm but certainly drivable condition.
I don't know what timing he was referring to? If you get an explanation please post it.
I put my 60 T-10 together with all new collars, forks and synchro rings and it wouldn’t even shift outside the car. I had to go back and grind .010/side off of the forks before it would work. It shift great now in the car.
