I've been thinking about changing out my ignition coil on my stock 427 setup. I do not want to go with a different distributor and will stay stock with the Breakerless SE conversion in place. I haven't replaced the OEM coil in the time I've owned it. Never had a real reason to replace it, but I'm always tinkering and have a couple of questions.
Any suggestions for a replacement points style coil? Stay with an OEM repo or go with aftermarket- Pertronix, Mallory, MSD, etc.? And what would be the advantages of an aftermarket? Thanks in advance for your responses.
There are black painted aftermarket coils that look the same as the stock coil and perform well. You may need to peel off a sticker.
I like a stock look with hidden performance upgrades.
We did breakerless SE on an otherwise unmolested 67 or 68 SS396 camaro ... works great. OE coil is dated (inked-printed on coil body) ... don't lose it.
A lot of aftermarket coils will advertise VERY high output voltage. But the the firing voltage depends on the resistance in the circuit and unless you have a problem, you'll probably never need thaty high voltage. If your car runs good on the stock coil, it will not improve on an aftermarket one.
Generally, the only engines that see any improvements with ignition systems are hi performance, modified, supercharged, etc engines.
ie. a lot of carbed supercharged engines tend to run rich at idle. An aftermarket coil/ignition can improve the idle by firing through the carbon fouling.
