I got gas from one of the waterfront stations here and there was water in it. I had pretty much the same problems as you. When warm it ran fine. Drain the carb into a glass and see if there is water sitting at the bottom. It will be easy to see and you will only have wasted 15 mins of your life if the gas is clear.

i think the water in the gas scenario is a strong bet. the post above is a good idea. when the car is cold, i.e. it has set for a while, the water can drop out of suspension and create all kinds of problems. then as it runs, the incoming fuel (and water also) from the tank will re-emulsify the combination. by the time the engine is warm, the water suspended in the fuel will simply flash off either in the manifold or combustion chamber. at that point, it's nothing more than super high relative humidity.
i still go back to the ignition though.
again, there is a difference in the coils with red and white wires and the coils with red and yellow wires. i forget which way it goes but one cannot interchange with the other. the wrong one will give you a headache, which sounds like what you have now. also, do you have a true points type distributor or HEI vacuum advance? if it's the latter, are you putting dielectric grease between the module and distributor? that problem typically occurs when the engine is hot, but it's worth asking.

Hi Dmon
No the 81 has an engine mounted fuel pump. I have an holley high pressure pump and a presure contro, valve set at a little under 6 lbs.
This has been runing good before the distrubitor problems started.

I do have the Summit HEI vacuum advance distrubitor and have put dielectric grease between the module and distributor? that problem typically occurs when the engine is hot.

This morning I am going to look into the carb for problems like water.
