My car stereo amp cuts out if voltage exceeds 15.5 volts or close to that. Lately it's been cutting out a lot. So I hooked up a VM to the battery while I drive around and watched the reading go from around 13-14volts idling to over 15 when accelerating.
My question is what should the normal volt output be and is this a possible sign the alt might be going out? THX
Kinda on the high side.
One of the 2 wires on the alternator plug is a sensor wire. It senses voltage in the system and adjusts accordingly. Check to make sure the contacts and connections are clean so it gets an accurate read.

a little high
Sounds a little high 14-14.5 is tthe norm. If you have an old style points voltage regulator, you can take the cap off and adjust your mak output with a twist of teh screwdriver. very simple, doen it before, PM me if you want details
I was thinking that internal regulator also, but not sure how to replace. Not sure if its a points one as mentioned. I'll do a search to see if someone has done the internal reg thing.

internwl or external
my comment about the points regulater only applies for an externaly regulated charging system. this would be a sqare box held to the inner fender conneted to the hardes by a 4 wire connector tow of which run to the alternator

The '69 has an internal regulator. You split the case, remove several small bolts, swap the regulator, push the brushes into their housings and retain with a small allen wrench or nail, put the cases back together, and finally pull out the allen wrench.
Sounds high to me...Should be no more than 14.4 - 14.5v. at the battery.
Yeah..15V is way too high, god knows what else ya could be frying, that amp won't take too much more of that...either replace the whole alternator or do as above if you're cheap like me..
Good luck...
