Has anyone welded baffles into their '75-'77 tank around the fuel pickup? I would like to install an in-tank pump for my FI conversion. The pumps with built-in reservoirs are a good option, but very expensive. I can get a 255 lph Walbro for about 1/5 of the cost of the Delco pump with reservoir.
I'm curious to see what feedback you get. I am running a stock tank with external pump on the inside rear frame rail. Replaced return line fitting on sending unit with -8an bulkhead fitting, and tubing into tank a ways to avoid aeration. Tried a '82 tank during construction, but different body than my '76. Always wanted to measure for a Summit pro street cell with foam, to see if it could be made to fit. Then there's that custom tank outfit, I think it's "Rock Valley" or something like that.
I am using an early tank with no baffle and an external pump on mine. I keep it above 1/4 and have never had an issue. It would be nice to have a baffle and an internal pump, but I don't know how you would do it (baffle) on a stock tank. You don't want to bolt it through the tank, and glue isn't going to hold inside. Also, physically getting in there is an issue. 82's don't have a baffle. I would just put the pump internal, and not worry about the baffle.
If I had any idea what baffles were supposed look like (I'm thinking of long L-shaped pieces of steel, with some spaces at the end for fluid to move around, I might be willing to tackle this...can't believe no one has done it with all the FI conversions around here.
I was planning on making the walls in an "L" shape, drilling some holes in the bottom of the tank, and plug welding them in. I'll have to shine a light in a couple of gas tanks next time I'm at the pick-n-pull.
Make sure you get all the vapors out. Welding is not generally recommended on a fuel tank.
Tanks are easy to weld. Drain all gas out, put a shop vac hose on blow into the tank and leave it run for as little as 5 minutes, but I am chicken and leave it for 30 minutes. After that the tank is safe to do anything with.
I put 2 bottom takesoffs on both my tanks and silver braze them into place.
