I'm seroisly thinking about getting a NOS system for my 80. It is stock except for the headers i'm going to put on. Is there any other mods that i need to get before the NOS? :smash:  :smash:  :smash:
Nitrous Oxide will quickly grenade a stock motor, especially one with some miles on it. Even a 100 HP system would be pushing the limit. An engine needs to be built for Nitrous Oxide (forged pistons, etc.) .
The only thing I would get would be a spare motor :D .....U wull need it after shooting that much juice to that engine................Sorry but I would not recommend it!! :(

Re: NOS WHOOOHOOOO -- BOOOOOOMMM !!!
While I don't agree that it will kill a stock motor, it would not be a good idea on THAT motor.
NOS puts a lot more stress on the bottom end, the crank, rods, and pistons.
In the L-48 it is only a 2 bolt main and a cast crank, neither are a good idea on NOS.
The cast pistons would be fine up to the 150 HP NOS kit, as long as you take steps to stay away from being lean and having pre-ignition.
I do not recommend NOS on that motor. I would look to either replace that motor to get more power or add on items such as heads, intake, cam, exhaust and tuning to get more power out of the L-48.
Personally -- I am pitching mine and going with a ZZ4.
I understand that it will put a lot of stress on the motor. but for the few times that i would use it, i don't think it would destroy it. I could be wrong, what do i know
I have been told on here that you should run anything over 125 horsepower
But if you want to be able to run alot more you need to get a few things
arp piston rod bolts
arp 2 bolt mains
arp 2 bolt main bolts
and you also should do a quick rebuild over the whole engine along with a blue print job
a forged piston and forged crank and piston rods
but for that you could just get a strong small block
You should also look into another gas line going to the carb electric and all alone
you might also want to have a msd ignition system plugged up so that you can get a retarded timing when nitrous is ingaged but without running around with no power
Power is addictive, if you have some, you'll want more. Now you don't think you'll use it that often, but you will. The only to keep yourself from using it will to run without a bottle.
Spend a little more and kick your engine up a little first. New cam and new heads can get you 40-60 hp that you can use every day. The heads and cam will wake those headers up.
A Quadrajet NOS plate system requires an open plenum aftermarket intake manifold to work right, ie. Edlebrock Performer RPM or similar. Your low compression engine can handle up to 100hp with cast pistons just fine.
i agree with neo stock motor could grenade ran several motors on nos one i did for a guy on a stock motor i warned him but he wanted it ..can you say melted pistons you could see the ring lands from the top of the pistons....maybe a 50 horse shot would work but when you get to 100 or above your looking for trouble ona carbed motor...fuel injected motors are more forgiving...just my oppinion.
N2O is good if used wisely. If you can do that, you DON'T need forged pistons. I've seen forged pistons melted by too much N2O and not enough gas. It's just a matter of not getting too greedy.
i do agree with you nastee383 not enough fuel and boom but there is alot of nitrous companys saying that it will work on a stock motor so people think ill bolt a 125 horse or more system on and be ok but like you said use it wisely.....

Re: NOS WHOOOHOOOO (ZD75blue)
does the 80 have fuel injection???
if it does I would either get a mini ram or get a carb because I seriously doubt that the cross fire will be able to feed a NOS sytem
ZD
For what it's worth: the cross-fire injection system is very capable of being adapted to use an NOS system. Sure, they are different that other fuel injection units, but kits can easily be bought and installed to run a Cross-Fire with NOS. Cross-fire injection was only used for two years though: 1982 and 1984.
Just a couple notes, I have studied NOS systems extensively.
The main reason engines go Chernobyl when running N20 is that it's not setup to richen the fuel and retard the timing when the N20 is being injected. This is why in the past a lot more engines have blown up, and now you hear less about it. With EFI (properly setup) it practically becomes a non-issue.
This is not to say you can run a 300HP shot on a stock motor as long as you richen the fuel mixture. You just have to do it right
