Default Cam problem Need advice

Need Advice,

I curriently own a 1980 L-48 with 34000 original Miles and the cam lobe on the #8 Cylinder is just about worn out. Car runs ok until u step on the gas,

What to do

I have to replace the cam and I would like more power out of the car. The car is 100% stock and I really do not want to do anything that effects the value. I was thinking about an L-82 cam or a higher perfomance cam without changing the heads or carb.

Suggestion and advice welcome

Thank you
Mike

You can do that but I wouldn't go any wilder with the cam specs. It will idle with a little more lope in it and the low speed torque will be a little less but you will get a little better top end breathing. You would get even more HP if you installed a roller can but that can get expensive.

Yes, you could. Rear gears should also be considered, trans. in your sig.

Since it is an 80, I wouldn't worry about value much. I don't think you will hurt it by going with some different heads and a different cam. I just did this to my stock 80. I just kept all the original parts that came off the car just in case someone would want to go back to the smog motor for some insane reason. The car still looks fairly stock other than my "bling" valve covers, I kept the Q-jet and intake and did a a competion cams 268H and Summit heads. Makes all the difference in the world. Also, go true dual exhaust, that will help kick you in the butt and let the engine breathe a bit better.

I am not trying to dog on the 80, I have one as well, but I don't think resale on them is ever going to be anything to get the panties in a bunch over. I say do what you want to the car and enjoy it. Without a head change, the cam change won't be as effective.

Better cams than L82 for stock '80 L48 w/ auto & stock 3.08 gear.

SpeedPro-Sealed Power P/N CS1013R .443"/.465" 214*/224* lcl 112* ... Same cam with lifters P/N KC1013R ... available local parts house for less $ than crane, lunati, comp etc ... top quality, dual-pattern, hydraulic flat tappet ... works with L48 springs. You might need new pushrod set too ... SpeedPro-Sealed Power P/N RP5000RK ... inexpensive ... top quality ... locally available.
