Default Timing Advance Question

I just had my engine tuned on a Sun machine. The total timing advance was 45 degrees. I had them set it at 34 degrees total at 2,800. Thirty four degrees is where my heads are to perform the best. They plugged the vacuum advance and acheived the total advance with just the springs and weights. Question? Which is better to install adjustable vacuum advance unit or leave it as is? My initial timing is 12. Would I benefit raising it? If so would I loose bottom end torque? I have no pinging on pump gas. :seeya

According to Lars, adding another 20 degrees or so of vacuum advance won't hurt your performance (as long as it's attached to a ported vacuum source) and will help with your fuel economy.

Bud, car will run better for the street if you use vacuum advance as well. I suggest limiting the amount of aditional advance at cruise to 6 or8 degrees. I suggest just taking the factory advance out of the dist and somehow limit the amount of advance from the vacuum diaphram by shortening the lenght of the slot where the pull rod rides in. I used a small piece of metal held in place by a small screw. I limited my factory advance to 6degrees and it didnt cost a penny.
