I have a 71 coupe and the previous owner replaced the side mirrors with the 80's sports mirrors. I am going to try to change them back to the original mirrors (on both sides). I am also replacing my door panels and want to get it done at the same time. Does anyone know if there is any trick to taking off the current mirrors, and then puting on the new chrome ones? Do I take them off from the inside of the door? I ordered all the hardware that I'm told I need.
Not quite sure but I think they unbolt form the inside (thinking back to my days with a 72). I am attemting to get in the doors of my 82 and it does not lock easy. I have some lock and latch issues. I was told to remove the window glass. It gives you more room to work. Good luck!
O.K. Take off the interior door panels - that will give you access to the underside of the door skin, roll the window up out of the way and see what kind of fasteners your "custom installed" mirrors have.
The mirrors on the late 70's early 80s cars are bolted on from inside the door, and the glass has to come out to get to the nuts. I just took them off last weekend on my 79 along with the trim, handle and lock cylinder on my doors in preparation for paint. (I hope someone doesn't come back with an easier way and make me feel like a fool for all that work!)
