In starting th rebuild of my chasis, I was thinking about replacing all of the nuts and bolts. Some of the nuts seem to be special locking nuts in which the top edged of the nut seemed to be hammered to crush the threads a bit in a triangular form. I think these are prevailing torque nuts. I was wondering if substituting the nylon insert lock nuts would be ok? (The only issue with the nylon is they can be affected by heat).
I am not really concerned about having an exact match but rather with proper grade and not having to worry about the bolt failing.
I was also concerned about the length of the treads on the bolt, that it may be weaker than the original that has threads only on half the bolt as opposed to replacements that may have threads the length of the bolt.
If I can clean up some of the original nuts and bolts and if they seem to be in good condition, does anyone think it would be a bad idea to not use them again? Considering replacing all of the chasis nuts and bolts would a small cost compared to the rest of the rebuild?
When you say "all the nuts and bolts on the chassis", are you also including suspension? If so, that's a LOT of nuts and bolts.
At any rate, Zip Corvette has just about every nut and bolt you need. In many cases, you can buy the "NCRS correct" ones, or an aftermarket of the same size for a lot less. Check 'em out; very helpful folks.
Get a catalog from Paragon. They have the most extensive collection of bolts I have seen from any of the vendors. Their catalog shows pictures of all the bolts and headmarkings and they can supply exact replacements. I had a lot of my bolts re-plated but if I had it to do over again, I would have bought all new from Paragon.
Their catalog is also one of the best I've seen of all the vendors. It costs $5 though, unless you make a purchase. Well worth the money just as a reference IMO.
