Can someone suggest a replacement air cleaner for my 71 bb, something with a big chrome lid and with better flow,i'm still using the stock carb....
:smash:
An open element air cleaner, like the one used on 71 LT-1s and LS-6s, will flow more air than your current dual snorkel unit. These "drop-down" type air cleaners are GM-discontinued but I think that reproductions are now finally starting to "hit the market". Using one of these air cleaners with a K&N element will boost air flow even more, but will require a lot more maintenence if filtering efficiency is to remain up to snuff.
If you use the K&N replacement for the stock AC-212 CW element size, it will fit under your hood.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is this: if you have to undergo emissions inspections in your area, you will need to save the dual snorkel, closed element air cleaner and reinstall it on the car at inspection time. Replacing a closed element with an open element is usually emissions-illegal.
Nohperformance is on ebay everday and sells the complete base and nice repro chome top for about $70. Buy the K&n like joe says and you will feel the difference the first time you let it ripp. Punch in 70 corvette air cleaner on ebay>
