Default Trany problems

To start I have a 73' 454 auto trany. I just got the engine running perfect and took it for a drive around the subdivision at slow speeds. Then got on the open road and gunned it. I Normally shift my gears even though its an auto from 1rst to about 4500rmps and so on. When I hit 3rd today I heard a loud clanking in the transmission. I managed to make it to about 10 houses away from my house where I had it pulled by my dodge, thanks to a neighbor. Is there a possiblity I blew the trany or just a linkage. The only gear that works is the park gear. Everything other gear won't do a thing. New trany or rework is the ?. Thanks, Matt

If Park keeps the car from moving and no other gear works, that's a pretty good sign that the tranny is the problem. I'm certainly no tranny expert but would suggest that at least you check the fluid level and lines before paying for a rebuild. I don't think that the clanking that you heard on the shift is a particularly good sign either.

Hope I'm wrong.
