Personally, I choose to do business elsewhere and minimize my chances of being ripped off. Granted, this guy didn't do everything he could have, but it's obvious that the method of transaction facilitated the crime.
79MakoL82 - I hear that - I don't know that I'd ever buy anything as big as a vehicle sight unseen (ebay, through Hemmings, Old Car Trader or any other place). My limit is in the $200.00 range - if I do get ripped off it would hurt, but nothing like buying and then never receiving a vehicle.
Stickboy been there - back when I still had a dial up account I was all ready to bid - counting down to the perfect (not give the other guy time to out bid) time and then lost my connect - auction was over long before I could modem back in - ouch!
rrent's got the right idea. Ebay actually does guarantee auctions up to $200, minus a $25 deductible. I can't even begin to think about actually buying a used car that I haven't seen, haven't driven, and can't take home with me the minute I pay for it. You do have to pick your auctions and take reasonable care, but even if you do get screw every once and a while (like I said, I've got 200+ auctions & haven't been completely screwed yet), the amount of money you save is worth the occasional loss.
If you're the nervous type, look at the feedback. Nobody with, say, a rating of 150 with no negatives is going to suddenly start screwing people.
As a defender of eBay in an earlier post, I should fess up and admit that I would never buy a car through eBay. I've actually bid on a few 1st Gen Camaros w/o motor, tranny, etc. that are basket cases anyway but on all of them the bidding just got totally out of hand. I look occasionally out of curiosity but have totally dismissed the idea of bidding on cars entirely.
There have been some good points made, especially the exclusive use of PayPal, reviewing seller's feedback, requiring pictures and limiting bids to lower priced items.
The highest priced item I've bought is a complete narrowed, heavy duty Ford 9 inch rear end with Moser axles, spool and 4.11s for $500. The item had many pictures online, the seller had good feedback and accepted PayPal. The transaction went real smooth.
I snagged a second set of canvas (I think for accurately vinyl) t-tops off of ebay. Still need to send the cash and get them shipped in. These were listed for '78-'82 - I'll have to see if they are in fact '78-'82 or '68-'77 - like the set I have/use now.
I gotta say I love ebay - like a swap meet in the air conditioned comfort of your home :D :D :D
You found another set? Good for you . Mine were a real attraction at a Cruise-In today. Six persons asked me where I got them. Of course, I still do not know the name of the company. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=131388
The set I have says Michigan and then a patent number. This set was listed on ebay and I've seen them elsewhere called AM tops - don't know if this is accurate.
If the ones you have work on your '79, these might be for the '78-'82 style tops - if so I might sell them, or save them in case I get glass tops and modify my '77 to accept the later type tops.
