Gee whizz, no one has called me "young" for thirty years; sounds good. I'm thinking at my age the opportunity for sidepipes (remember when we called them lakers?)
snip---
Young? Cool, thats a new one :-D
I think they are called lake pipe on any car except a vette ;-)
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
I had a complete Hooker sidemount system ready to go on and then I decided to go with 3 inch under car system. I also purchased the high flow spiral inserts for the sidepipes because I was looking for the best performance. I started thinking about it and I new my new ( at the time ) 406ci was going to be putting out some power and I thought the sidepipes were going to be too loud.
If you buy mufflers for a 3 inch system make sure they are 3 inch inside too, many of the "3 inch" mufflers have 2 1/2" pipes inside
i had a set off uncaped spiral "mufflers" in my hookers. thing crackeled like a fueler. i like the sound off sidepipes all my vehicials have custom exhaust but they where a little two sharp with my engine. then i had a set off custom stainles headers made with 4 inch tubes and had them build mufflers inside. much more mellow and still made nice power. dumped them for factory type though after the paint job. they really are restrictive but sound sweet.
Stock GM side exhausts are 1 7/8 i.d. I believe.
Hooker side exhausts with Hooker muffler inserts are the same.
Spiral Turbo baffles are the way to go on the Hooker setup, IMO.
For the stock GM side exhaust, you can use C-2 style 2 1/2 " chambered inserts from Sweet Thunder or 3" i.d. chambered inserts from Classic Chambered Exhaust.
. Someone also mentioned shields--have yet to see any aftermarket applications except for factory fiberglass reproductions. Anyone got a lead where to find those as well?
These are for Hooker sidemounts. Prices quoted from about a year ago.
The heat shields are from www.cobrastuff.com . Call them and tell them that they are for the 4" diameter Hookers and they will give you longer mounting clamps. He has them from $170 unpainted, $180 chrome, and $190 ceramic plus $10 shipping. They are 27" long and work great. He also has 36" chrome ones for around $200..

But what is your hearing worth> YOU guys are young and think you will worry about it down the road., Too late. Protect your hearing now. If you run quiet mufflers in the side pipes you are still sitting over the outlet and regardless of the noise you are hurting your ears.
A good under car exhuast is far better.
I might go to regular exhuast becuase of this. I already filled in my exhuast valance through so I don't know were to dump it out.
I have factory style side pipes on a sb, they are definately louder than the stock dual system they replaced, by a long margin. However the only trully damaging noise, hearing wise that comes with them is a beating noise just off idle. The noise when you open the throttle up is definately audile but no where near as annoyingly loud as this just off idle thump (it is worst at about 700-1700 rpm), and unfortunately with the rear gears in my '70 at the moment cruising on the highway at 70 falls into the rpm zone that makes this beating noise (so I just have to go a bit faster........)
Has anyone run a cross-over pipe with side pipes?, I know it is made more difficult with the way the pipes just go straight out to the fenders but after having a long look, with the factory style side exhaust I think a crossover pipe is do-able and may aleviate the only issue I have with side-pipes, the noise otherwise is great!

Like I said earlier, at an equivalent in-cabin decibel level, the position of the outlets doesn't matter.
I think it does. when you drive with the windows down I can't hear very good for a few days. The in cabin noise is no were near as bad as the exhaust exiting right there.
I don't run mufflers.

I concidered the side mounts till I saw the price.I spent about $800. for my 3" duals mufflers and all.The sound is "muscle car" durng normal cruising, and when you stand on it,sounds like side pipes. The mufflers I went with are Edelcrock RPM's with the 3" in/out centered. They are practically straight glasspacks.
All said, there's one point I see nobody mentioned. You can see side pipes. They may look sweet to you,but a police officer may concider it "reasonable cause" for a roadside chat. The other point is for the "daily driver"(myself included), one rainy day and you're in the garage for hours rubbing the water spots off the pipes.I myself don't have that kind of spare time.
No way do you lose ground clearance with sidepipes. In fact you gain significant clearance, especially if consideringa 3 inch undercar system. I have had em all on my car and the Hooker sidepipes offer the best case as far as ground clearance goes, hands down.
Very much agreed. I'm running 4" Hooker sidemounts and my lowest point is the bellhousing. Next lowest is the [b/]factory[/b] BB oilpan.
Also agree with the guys saying that spiral inserts reduce the sound to below that of the wind at highway speeds.
I'm running a TKO-600-64 with a 3.36 out back and 27" tires, so my cruise RPM is just below 2000.
Heat in the cabin is not a problem with a sidepipes.
Heat on the calves is not a problem once you put on a set of shields. I built my own.
Since we are on the subject of sidepipes, has anyone used a 3 inch side pipe application with a 454? If so, where can they be found? Is 3 inch enough? I tried going straight to Jet Hot, but no 3 inch applications were found there.
