The first one is part of the L-88 hood setup which has the filter in underside of the hood.

The second would work w/ a hole in the hood.

ganey, the second one is the one i have on my vette, i've got a high rise hood and this filter just slightly touch it, should i cut a round hole right where the filter is to make the engine breath better or maybe build a scoop to let more fresh air in? thanks/Giu

Giu

The L-88 hood takes in high pressure air at the base of the windshield.
The stock 73-79 hoods can be opened at the back of the center hood bulge. You might be able to do that w/ yours. Which hood do you have?

Yes, your hood can be opened at the back of the center hood bulge if not already open. Is this clear- do you know what I mean?

yes ganey, the hood is already opened at the back of the bulge...i was thinking that if i opened a large hole in the front of it it would create a stream of fresh air... or the opening in the back is enough to evacuate the heat from under the hood?

The L-88 setup in the first pic is superior. You need an airbox bonded to the underside of the hood like this:

The bottom of the windshield is a high pressure area and more air will be forced into the engine than if you open the front.

The opening at back takes in high pressure air at speed & lets hot air out when stopped. At speed the side vents let hot air out. You are in good shape like it is.
Another way is to use an underhood air box.

That tall K&N you're running will allow more airflow than anything going. All you have to do is make sure the air is available as Ganey said above. Your hood is designed to induct air, as long as the back of the cowl is open for flow.

Are you running without vacc advance?
What engine is that? Looks great!!

the engine is made by 'American Speed co' of illinois, its a 406ci dinoed at the flywheel at 570hp at 6.200rpm and 530tq at 4.300 rpm, little M blk, afr 210 cnc heads, forged internals, victor jr inlet and 850 mighty demon carb..it runs with no vacuum. this engine runs like a clock, has a loopy sweet idle and sounds like a thunder. i will never be able to thanks enough the builder for it

I got it from Ecklers. This is what the original L-88 air induction was, Ecklers is just copying GM. The top of the hood looks like yours:

I disagree.

The original style L-88 hood not only provide slightly pressurized air to the engine which at speed more than makes up for the slightly reduced restriction of the K&N vented lid. Further the base of the windshield air inlet provide cooler denser air providing more ultimate power.
