(Yawn) Which Heads And Cam??
As you can see from my sig I'm at the point where I'm going to do the heads and cam thing in the fall.
My L48 is stock, just the headers, mufflers and manifold on an 8.5:1 L48. I like the trickflows and would like to go aluminum and stay around $1000 for the heads. I figure the smaller chambers will lift my CR to 9.5:1, what cam would y'all recommend. Kinda like the Comp cams 268 or 270 (stock converter). I will also be slapping on some nice ali roller rockers, pertronix ignition and other minor things.
So...would anybody like to comment on Edelbrock heads or Dart (would like to stay aluminum) and if I was to fiddle with the converter, how radical a cam can I use and stay streetable.
Cheers.

Re: (Yawn) Which Heads And Cam?? (Go Ravens)
W/ a stock auto./converter you need low rpm hp or tq to get it off the line. 20 more at low rpm is more helpful than 20 more at high rpm. Many like a 260H or XE256 for stock auto./converter.
You don't need full roller rockers, get roller tip.
If your engine is tired & you go up a step on cam to a 268H, then it may accel. slowly to about 3000 rpm & then take off.
Do you want a smooth idle? What are rear gears?

Re: (Yawn) Which Heads And Cam?? (Go Ravens)
I've got a stock L-48 that I'm adding a performer manifold, headers, and a set of lifhtly ported stock heads to along with a cam. I'm looking at the Comp Extreme Energy 262 as a good match for my stock convertor and 3.55 gears. Project is almost to the end of the gathering stage and should be together by the end of the month. I'll let everyone know how it works out. The last part to buy is the camshaft since I've been wringing my hands and worrying about getting enough without getting too much.

I don't know if this helps, but I'll be changing the heads on my engine this fall as well, so I'll be looking to sell mine. They are "041" heads off a 350/350, ported and polished, Ferrea valves 2.02 Intake and 1.60 exhaust. 64 cc chambers. I need larger chambers to run pump gas in my 406 :smash:

Hey steve:
The TFS alum heads are a great deal at $850. Chevy High Performance got over 400HP and 400 lb-ft out of a 355 with a Comp Cams XE-268 cam and a Performer RPM intake. That's pretty reasonable.
You could also ask around and see if you can stumble on a set of L98 aluminum Corvette heads. they're no bad for the money.
The other option is to stay iron and go with the Vortecs. They head is outstanding and can be had for around $400. If you want to stay with a milder cam this is a good option. Bigger cams need bigger springs, but that's a pretty reasonable expense. The only downside with the vortecs is that you definately need a new intake because the bolt pattern is different.
All three of these heads have smaller chambers and will help get you some compression with those stock pistons, and non are all that exotics and expensive.
See ya tailgating! -

RadRaven??? Where have you been? The Ravens board is rockin'. I'm tailgating with Poes Crows/Nest 1 about 30ft from Roost51 so I will see you.
Won't be there for pre-season though.
Anyway, isn't there an issue with the Vortecs and self aligning pushrods?

With an automatic run a 2500 stall vert with the EX 268. Dont be affraid to hold the pedal down to 5500rpm + with this cam. If yur motor aint so fresh then go with XE262. 3.08's will work ok with the 268 so long as you have the 2500 stall. Put some headers on it too. Dynomax Ceramic Coated. If yur plannin on stock manifolds I would not go over the 262.

Still around bud. I'm probably on your board more than this one! Remember when you gave the option for aliases? Well Rad Raven has been wearing the moniker 'Viva Las Raven' since then. Of course if Grbac is a dud I'll be changing back real quick...LOL
