Default Stating problems

I've replaced the battery (new Optima), replaced the starter & solenoid,..added an .060 shim to the starter, and I still have cranking issues.

It cranks as if it has 14:1 compression (73, 454 has 8.25:1 CR),..very slow, more noticeable when warm. It's as if the starter is too small for the job, but again, this is the second starter.

When you first hit the key the engine will turn maybe a quarter turn, pause, turn another quarter, pause (this can be repeated up to 4-5 times) then cranks like it should.

I took the inspection cover off and checked the flex plate...it's fine,..nothing bent, no broken ring gear teeth, nothing chewed up, etc.

I'm about to replace the positive battery cable, but the original one looks ok. I don't believe this will solve anything except separating me from my hard-earned jack.

Alternator is good.

I'm out of ideas,..any help appreciated.

Wes

Recheck the timing. If it is too far advanced, the engine could be kicking back. It would be more pronounced with the engine warm. I doubt it's the starter as I assume the new starter made absolutely no difference.

Good luck

Make sure your cable connections (power and grounds) are tight and free of dirt & oxidation. Take a file or sandpaper to the surfaces if you have to, they should all be shiny. Also, it could be the cable.

When cranking there are hundreds of amps flowing through the cable. Even the slightest bit of resistance, either in the cable or at the connections, can cause a big reduction in power to your starter.
