Default 487 heads

What's your opinion on the 3973487 cylinder heads.Mor tec has them listed as 71-72 350 LT-1,with 75cc chambers. Is this the 350-350hp motor?I know that the 487x is the better flowing ones. These heads that I'm looking at are in very nice condition,$100.00.I'm thinking I should jump on them.Whatcha think.......

for 100 bucks it sounds like a decent deal. do they come with springs and valves/ Can you see them before you buy, if you can check them for cracks then sound boots -n- saddles and take 'em home

For non but the shades of cavalrymen will stop at Fiddlers Green!!!!

487 also came on L48 ... some have 1.94/1.5 ... some 2.02/1.6 ... 487 doesn't flow significantly different than other-numbered 74cc-76cc ... but if made in 71 or newer thay'll have hardened seats ... 487 heavier castings lend themselves to milling better than later other-numbered liteweight castings that began about 1977. If 487 in nice usable shape for $100/pr they're worth having. I have a spare pair 487 ... not for sale.

487X hard to find ... those that have NOT been ported are worth more to circle trackers in production head classes.

Hey Sweethence,
You ole armor dog.Yes I've seen only pics. They come complete. Were redone not long ago.The guy said they were checked. They are very clean, and the valves have no weird discoloration,or buildup.

Well no guts no glory!!! Good to hear your still breathin' Id get the heads if i were you if for no other reason than to say you got them. when they show up, if they are indeed good to go, then its wrenchin' time.

Giddy up
Ill tell you what an old tanker told me on VE day 50 years later in Pilsen, The Czech republic, after beating the Germans and demanding unfinished beer from the local brew meister.......

Tankers have lots of audacity and no taste.

True story

487X heads are not all that uncommon. They were used on at least the Corvette base engine -sans big valves, guide plates, and heavier springs- as well at the LT-1. You could also find them in other car lines that used the same engines. I have a set of X heads that were on my base-engined '72. I know that they could also be found on Novas and Chevelles in '72. Only difference between 487 and 487X is that the X had 10cc more intake port volume.

The heads, at $100, is more than a fair price especially for someone doing a restoration. From a performance perspective, they're just okay.

I am on my second 72 vette with the base 350. Both had the 487X heads, date coded correctly for each car. I have heard conflicting stories about the valve sizing on the 487X heads, 202's on the intakes vs the 194's????
Haven't pulled the heads to confirm the valve size.
What intrigues me is if the intake runners are over 170cc and with the large valves....these heads are decent, except for the large chambers.

my base motor 72 has the X heads also...I don't know what the valve size for sure, but I've been in other guys base motor 71s/72s and mine revs better on the top end so I suspect it might have the 202 valves.

Thanks for all the input people.Looks like these heads are just pretty good, and nothing special.I was hoping they would be real good when I read they were for the LT-1.I think for $100.00 that I should go ahead and get them.I've asked the guy more questions,so I'll wait and see what he has to say. Thanks again....
