Default Silly question

so I have my ghetto cheap shaft rockers, but they cover up one of my bolt holes. Can I use studs on all the other bolt positions and use bolts where the shaft rocker base is?

Bolts work just as well as studs, in fact with big blocks they allow head removal without engine removal, should the need arise, not sure about small blocks. The reason for running studs is to keep the threads in the block from wearing out with frequent head removal.

The purpose of bolts is to provide even pressure on the threads prevent breakages. Bolts twist and apply uneven pressures and twist the metal. Studs provide even pressure upward. Its apparently signifigant enough that when you machine blocks it is recommended that you use studs or bolts to hold the deck plate based upon the way that bolts or studs will warp the block deck because of torque pressure. Same with main studs.

If studs were critical, don't you think most auto manufactures would be doing this already? And deck plates are used to load the top of the cylinders with the stresses that they will see when the engine is assembled resulting in an accurate (round) cylinder at the top of the bore when the engine is assembled for the final time.

they arent critical for engines running OE power levels, but when you start getting into the double and triple power outputs it starts being a different story.

Yes deckplates are used to load the top of the cylinders with the stresses that exist when assembled. what do you think those stresses are? Bolt pressures and twisting of the metal. Studs apply an even pressure on all the threads. resulting in better seals, and less failures. why do you think most race engines use studs?

Frequent teardowns, aluminum blocks. Other than wear, twist is irrelevant in cast iron.

Don't believe everything you read, including (especially?) this.

My gosh, you don't sound like you really need help with your original question.
