Hi all, just a quick question. From the picture, I think these are rear bumper supports (or energy absorbers as a previous thread stated). Do they need to be removed to get the body off?
I think the answer may be obvious, but I like to play it safe
Just remove the bumper cover. There are 4 studs on each side, and 8 screws at the top of the cover. You will have to remove the fuel filler lid, and the rubber cup to gain access to the center screws. The tail lights are mounted to a ring behind each light assembly that is retained by three 1/4" diameter philips screws. You will have to get them from underneath.
Thanks for the replies guys, but is it neccesary to remove the bumper cover to get the body off? I thought it could come off without taking the body apart. So if I remove the bumper cover, then the bumpers attached to the frame can stay?
If I remove the absorbers bolts from frame side and from bumper side without taking the bumper cover off, the body still won't come off?
Sorry for my ignorance on this matter guys, thanks..

b.t.w. I forgot to mention that it's a '78
Mine is also a '78. You will have to remove the bumper cover to remove the body. The actual bumper can stay attached to the frame. You will not have to remove it, only the cover because it wraps under the actual bumper. Also buy leaving the bumper attached you don't have to try and line it back up later.

Yeah, but since everything under there will be grungy and oily and rusty you will probably end up taking it all apart anyway to clean it and paint it.
I've got a lot of work ahead of me. I've taken a little time off from working on the car (like a couple of years!!), so the extra work of taking the bumper cover off in the grand scheme of things I guess is not a big deal.

I've decided to do a body off and resto in the summer, but I just recently actually started to take parts off the car. I'm sure I'll be asking many questions here that I can't find in the search function....
