Default Half shaft strength

Anyone ever narrowed a set of C4 aluminum half shafts. I have seen some pretty high HP C4 cars running stock half shafts. They seem pretty strong. Or is it better to have a set of half shafts made. I'm not running obscene HP just don't like the stock 2 1/2 shafts. Mine are dented also and have been for quite a while. I'm living on borrowed time with them.

with the cost of having them narrowed, why not buy the correct lengths ones from dennys?

I looked at Dennys also. I have not looked into the cost of narrowing. I have a local shop here and have to get a price on narrowing. If it is close I'll just get the new ones.

Looking at Denny's his yokes are 1350 series, what are the standard half shaft u-joints on early C3's?

I'm just looking for clarification on the subject......

thanks for any input.

Narrowing the C4 shafts will make them stronger. Your dented shafts have handled everything to date so they have been strong. Carbon fiber shafts are used by a few on the Forum but costly....is there much differance in weight between the C3 shafts and the C4's.....

I've always wondered...

What all is involved with shortening a driveshaft/half shaft... Can you do it yourself?

Out of the four local "driveline" shops in Winnipeg that shorten driveshafts, only one said he would touch aluminum shafts. The others say it is too much trouble. I'm having a 3 inch aluminum 1995 driveshaft shortened for my 700r4 conversion in my 1980 Corvette.
Bring one of your halfshafts into a driveline shop and have them quote you a price on making up 3 inch shafts with the 1350 u-joint size end yokes. It might be cheaper in the long run.

Nope can't do it yourself...need specialized equipment for the accuracy. Then they have to be balanced much like balancing tires on wheels with weights added (welded) to the shaft.

Default Why not get a set of 3" with Solid U-Joints

from Dragvette.com. $218 for the set which have the flanges and solid u-joints but they are not the Spicer Life. then upgrade to Spicer Life Solids for an Additional $100.

Give Steve a call, nice guy to work with.

Default Half shaft strength

Corvette engineering experienced some halfshaft breakage in testing (racing) & finally got larger 3" halfshafts in 75-79.

Might question Vansteel also. They'll answer questions just to help Vette owners. I purchased my half shafts, Spicers and heavy duty straps from them. My experience was that they're good folks to do business with.
