Default Electric Choke Wiring

1980 L48 Qjet
I have finished adjusting the electric choke on the carb and will be installing it this weekend (Got instructions from I think LARs and was easy to understand). The previous owners either removed the wire for electric choke or it never had one not sure.

Previous posts have said to use the yellow wire from the wiper motor??
Can anyone clarify. Splice into that wire, install at same port as wire for wiper motor at fuse panel- and how does it connect into the panel- do I need a clip or connector of some sort?? I am out of my limited knowledge set with electrical issues

Can anyone explain with some detail exactly where the wire goes for an electric choke st-up.

What you are looking for is a 12V source that is hot when the key is on. If you use the wire from the wiper motor you could probably use one of those "taps" that taps into that wire to make a connection. The other end of the circuit for your choke is the cars ground, which the choke gets by being bolted to the engine, so there isn't a wire. (Make sure the engine is grounded to the frame). The choke doesn't need a switch itself. When you turn the key on and the motor is cold, the choke will go on. When it gets hot enough, it will shut itself off automatically.

Good luck -

Can you clarify what you mean here? Am I taping into the back side of the fuse panel where the wire for the wiper motor goes into it??

Thanks

wire taps = "3M Scotchlocks" They just clamp onto a wire to make a connection, I have them on my choke and aftermarket tach.

get em at Radio Shack or whatever, about 2-3 bucks for a dozen

Here is how I like to do it. First cut the yellow wire & strip all the ends (make sure power is off).

Curl the wires together and solder them together.

Wrap the bare wire in electrical tape or heat shrink. I like to add a cable tie to prevent the tape from unravelling over time.

Wow - pretty thorough job Boofers!!

I'd tap in on the engine side so you don't need another hole in the firewall. Also, another source is the 12v lead on the alternator (I think...you can test it with a volt/ohmmeter to make sure).

The '80 'Vette should already have the factory electric choke wiring.

I know it should but I think bubba may have cut it. Do you know what color it is?

If I tap into the wire on the engine side would it be hot all the time with the ignition on or only when the wipers are on?

I suggested the yellow wire at the wiper motor a long time ago when switched power is needed underhood like for an el. choke so it's on w/ ig. key on.
80 wiring diagram shows a Lt. BLUE wire for el. choke.
