I'm replacing the flexplate that disintigrated. I've got the car on jacks and have everything disconected from the tranny including the driveshaft. I was checking prices on transmission jacks that are running over $200. Any other tricks other than buying this to have it collect in the garage with all the other 1 timers that I have purchased? I have jacks on rollers but I not fealing to safe using that meathod. Thanks
I yanked my 6 speed out from underneath the car on my back. I used a 3 ton floor jack and a towel to help me support the weight. But if I remember correctly, there is a way to pull the flywheel without dropping the trans... don't laugh I'm serious. Anyone else heard of this? Something like, dropping the driveshaft and sliding the trans back, then removing one bolt on the flex plate at a time while rotating it till it's free to slide out...?
If no one else remembers I will search for the thread on DC that I remember reading.

If you find that info that would be great. I'm at that spot where everything is disconnected even the bolts for the engine mount. All the bolts for the flexplate are disconnected also. It aint going to slide out with the drive in the way though. Thanks
Well I just took my TH400 (as the first part in my 700r4 swap) out this morning using my new $80 Harbor Freight tranny jack. It worked great for this as well as for dropping my gas tank the other night. It only took me about 1 1/2 hours to get everything out. I suppose you could replace the flexplate by just sliding the tranny back far enough to get a wrench in there but I'm not sure you would be gaining much.
First thing I did was remove the driveshaft, cooling hoses, and all the shifting linkages, wires etc. Then I removed the bell housing bolts. Next I removed the three flexplate to torque converter bolts. (You can skip this step for now since you've already separated the two. ) Now is a good time to support the rear of the engine and slide the tranny jack up into position. Lastly, remove the two rear tranny mount bolts and the six bolts holding the crossmember. Once the crossmember is out of the way the transmission can easily be pulled back and lowered out of the way. Replace your flexplate and put everything back together. One thing to make sure of on installation is that your torque converter is ALL the way in. Good luck. John
You don't have to pull the tranny all the way out . put 2 3/8 x4" bolts in the lower bolt holes of the bell houseing and remove the torque converter bolts . Put jack under oil pan to hold motor up and remove the trans mount bolts remove drive shaft slide trans back remove flex plate bolts remove flex plate

Well I can't find the old thread, I just looked. But basically I think you just need to take the bellhousing dust cover off, and attack each bolt one at a time and rotate the flexplate to gain access to all of them, then slide the converter back and you should be able to pull it out.

I wished I would have had those last couple of tips before 1am last night. I just yanked the entire tranny out instead. What a nice trannsmision leak mess.. The other half is still connected to the moter. Since I have it all out could the torque converted have cause this and if so is there an upgrade? Also the tranny dipstick snapped close the the housing of the tranny. Any way to fix that? I've seen a lot of comments on making sure the converter is in all the way before install. How do you know for sure that it is? A lot of ?s I know. Thanks for the advice, Matt

I've done it this way before. Only I perfected a trick of using a rachet strap over the frame rails and under the tranny. Put a 2x4 block under the pan on the tranny and tighten up the ratchet strap. Then you can work under the car without a jack in the way. Also pulled motors this way and left the tranny, swamper
