I pulled the top of my intake on my cross fire to switch out the gaskets...figured I might as well since the set had all of them for the plenum, throttle bodies and so on.
So at that point I figured I would polish the plenum plate and take off the valve covers to repaint them....why or why do I do this...
Pulled the covers and noticed a fair amount of sludge at first glance (67K miles) but after running a rag and some cleaner it wasn't that bad.
My question is two parts:
1. The rockers wiggle back and forth, is that normal or should they be as snug as possible? I was able to turn a nut on one about 1/8 or more turns with little to moderate effort....torque wrench is coming.
2. While I'm this far, should I replace the rockers with roller rockers? If so, what kind and do I need new push rods as well?
for starters you will NEVER use a torque wrench on a rocker arm. the proper way to adjust hydraulic lifters is with the lifters sitting on the base circle of the cam ( no lift ), tighten until you have zero lash/play on the pushrod and 1/2 to 3/4 turn more. your done. there is a proper seqence to follow, but if you have the intake off you can see if what lifters are on the base circle, and which are not. second new roller rockers are always a good idea but not a must have
see if you can turn a pushrod in your fingers, when their is no lift from the cam. if it spins or has some play room you need to adjust your rockers. i would use this method to determine if adjustment is needed before the loose rocker arm thing.
