I was just looking for an old post where a few of the C3 guys showed pics of their DIN stereo installs. With this new search function I am having a hard time finding that post. There is one I am looking for in particular, which is where a guy cut out an opening in his stock center guage bezel, and then molded filler around it to make it look relatively factory. Anyone remember that post? I really would like to re-read it, since I am considering doing that myself. I also would love to see those pics again. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
It wasn't me, but that's almost exactly what I did. I traced the opening of the stereo mounting frame on the bezel then used my dremel to cut it out. I was very careful to make it a very tight fit. The face plate of the stereo was large enough to cover the edge.
Yeah, that's what I think I am going to do. There was a guy who used body filler, or something similar to mold the chassis in with the bezel, and it looked like if GM had DIN stereos back then, it would have came like that. He had a pic. Hope he sees this.
AC,
Several months ago there was a guy selling DIN Bezels here. He popped in and advertised them and quickley dissappeared. I think the adapters required that the whole bottom of the bezel be cut off and then the new adapter slid in. The pictures of it looked pretty good. After his advertisement someone else piped in that he had bought an identical unit at a stereo shop. So apparently there is someplace that these things are available.
My 76 was totalled by a hit and run driver (but is still in my driveway while awaiting an offer from the insurance co :cry :cry )
But, here are the pics that you were looking for, from various stages of interior completion. It makes me sad to see them though, since the car is toast :(
I cut the hole in the bezel to fit the sleeve for the stereo, then used putty epoxy from home depot to mold the front. It sands down easily and molds well. Then painted the entire bezel with matte black. It looks factory even up close since there are not seams.
No Steve, that's not the one I was looking for. I remember the same posts you are talking about, but there was a different guy who used the stock 69 bezel, and no adapter. That's why he had to mold it in with filler, because the 69 bezel is sort of concave where the radio is. If the search function worked a little better, I am sure I could find it. :smash:
The bezel was already cut for DIN-sized decks when I bought the car, doesn't look like there's anything more to it than tracing the sleeve and using a Dremel or some similar tool to cut it out. I installed a new deck after buying the car, and it fits very well. All you need to do is trace the back of the sleeve (every new deck I've ever seen comes in one) and get that to fit. The sleeve slides in and is flared at the front edge just a bit to keep it from sliding too far (then you tweak the tabs on the back to sandwich it in place), and the deck's trim plate covers it all very nicely.
The later C3's have flat console faces, the earlier ones are concave and made of pot metal, and have raised edges around the *****. They are a bit harder to work with. I am really surprised that an aftermarket company doesn't manufacture bezels like this.
