I've rebuilt my suspension, pulled the engine and re-done the complete interior in my 71, but can't put the wheel trim rings on. They are NOS types so I don't want to bend them.Any tips to installing these things would be great. Thanks Rick
I use a rubber mallet on trim rings and center caps. On original 4 clip trim rings, I align the ring at the valve stem. I then make sure the closest clip is in the correct position on the rim and pop it on lightly. At that point I check the positions of the three remaining clips, make corrections if needed, and pop them down. I usually go back and make one more pass with the mallet over each clip.
They're such a pain in the you-know-what, I just ordered aftermarket rings that don't use the clips. I'll put my originals away in case I ever want to take it to Bloomington  .
I do the same as Tex71BB -- I store my original 4 clip rings until I feel a need to impress someone. For all other purposes, I run the stainless steel aftermarket vari-clip rings. It's the best of both worlds.
;)
I have had trouble with the mallet method - the clips tend to bend - It is usually easy to get the first clip on - after that I have used a screwdriver to get the inner spring on the inside of the outer ring then pop the ring on the rest of the way - do this for each ring --
