Default short block build

ok so i have been thinking of different ways on going about this and now i am thinking of taking my original 350 out and bringing it to a machine shop and letting them go through it and put new cam bearing in and freeze plugs and then ordering a new rotating assembly from summit or jegs. the only thing that worries me is installing the piston rings sense i have never done this and also sense i dont know how to gap them if that is what i have to do. any and all help is appreciated.

if you order an eagle rotating assembly, they have options for pre- gapped rings. then all ya gotta do is put them on.

almost forgot if the engine only needs to be honed again then the bore will still be .030 in. so what would be a good kit to use with the setup that i listed above. i am looking for a full forged rotating assembly so please give me any and all recomendations. TIA

To really make it run good the bores should be finished according to the type of pistons you have. The forged ones will have more clearance than a set of cast or hyper pistons. I never trust the rotating assemblies to be "right". Pay the machine shop that is doing the block to balance it and set the ring gap if you are not comfortable doing this. Get the kit unbalanced and have them balance everything including the flywheel. The kits that are ordered cannot be balanced correctly due to the fact they do not have the flywheel. The ywill be close but you want it right on.

gapping the rings will be the least of the issues you will be encountering.....get vizards book on rebuilding a small block chevy it explains it all. if you are comfortable in assembling everything the ring gap issue will not be a problem.
