Not entirely vette but some-what related. For years I've been wanting to build a formula style "kit" car. Chevy V8 mid mounted, where can I get a strong enough standard shift Transaxle without breaking the bank.
No, actually it was the C5 Corvette statement. Sorry if I came of as rude, not intended.
I'm not sure you understand my question. I have no intension of using a corvette frame. It will be tubular, like a fomula car but a 2 seater, no doors, no roof, just a windshield, cage, seats, dash ,ect. Mid engine is when the engine is in front of the rear axle not behind it. If you can mount directly to a C5/6 trans-axle then it will do the job.
Thanks
You can't use a Corvette transaxle, because it isn't really a transaxle. A normal transaxle for mid mounted engines has the outputs up near the engine with the trans part hanging off the rear. The Corvette version is basically a standard T56 trans bolted directly to the rearend. This would make the wheels way too far back for any car unless you were sitting on the engine.
Check ls1tech.com in the conversions section as there are some guys dealing with midmounted LS1's in Ultima's. Similar to what you are talking about.

Sorry bro, I was out of line. Something else was bugging me and I think I misread what you said while grumpy... never a good combination. Anyhow sorry about that.
Most of the mid engine kit cars I have seen are using transaxles out of a Pantera or a 911. However I think the 911 tranny needs modified and is then run upside-down. Both cost pretty big money.

I think I actually have an answer for you. There are several companies that sell sandrail transaxles for the LS1/ SBC bolt pattern. Most of them are four speed but they can take around 800hp. The axles come out the side and are on CV joints for IRS.
I've seen this in person opened up at sandrail expos, they look real stout.
Mendeola Transaxle

Be real careful with the Mendeola ratings. They normally rate their transaxles for sand use, and for on road use. The on road HP ratings are much lower. There are a lot of transaxles out there; do some searches on kit cars. I believe Audi made one, the Porsche ones have been mentioned. Corvair boxes are heavy (cast iron) and never had as many options for ring and pinions. A VW bus trans is the strongest of the stock VW units, but it has to run upside down for a mid-engine. It's really going to depend on your HP level and how you drive it. Mendeola makes a 5 speed unit with overdrive, but the rated HP is a little low for the street.
