Default Fixed Antenna - What does the ground strap do?

I have a fixed mast antenna on my 81 and as you may know, there is a ground strap that connects the frame to the antenna socket just below the fiberglass. Why does the antenna need to be grounded? What does this ground/grounding plate do?

It's part of the magic of radio reception. The antenna needs a reference for its signal. On a metal car, the car's body provides a grounded reference level. On a vette, we need a groundplate to do the same thing. Without it, your reception will not be very good.
